At the hotel we had 1 hour and 30 minutes before we had to leave for the competition. Liliana and I went through our dance 5 times. While we were practicing mom set up the bathroom so she could do our makeup and hair. She had been doing my makeup since 4th grade. She took out the list and got to work. Pancake makeup, then eye shadow and mascara, blush, and lipstick. Then it was Liliana’s turn. Same steps.
When our makeup was done the bathroom was a mess. Mom put the makeup away and Liliana and I cleaned of the sink. When we were done we had spent 45 minutes doing our makeup so we only had 45 minutes to do our hair. Liliana and I slicked back our hair in a ponytail. We used lots of gel. Then mom got out the hair donuts, bobby pins, and hair nets. ( No, not the kind the cafeteria lady’s wear) she pulled our hair up and put the squishy donuts in our hair. When my bun was done she secured it with bobby pins and hairspray and moved on to Liliana’s hair.
“Hannah I want you to practice some jumps and twirls to make sure your bun is tight enough,” Mom told me.
“OK mom,” I said to her.
Sure enough my bun stayed in place. When Liliana’s hair was done we got Dad and Christian from the other room, put our costumes and hair piece in our protection bags, got back in the car and started driving to the competition.
When we got to the theater we signed in and found out what dressing room our studio was in. Christian and dad went to go and find their seats and mom came down to the dressing room with us. Mrs.Meredith greeted us at the door and checked us off on her clipboard. We got changed into our costumes and then the thought hit me. The last time I danced with the group I’d hurt myself. I had only done about 5 full out leaps since. I didn't think I was ready.
“Mom what happens if I get hurt again? What if I mess everything up?” I asked her, starting to panic.
“Oh Hannah! Everything will be fine. You are the toughest girl I know,” She told me.
“ And you are the bravest friend I ever had,” Liliana chimed in.
“We all believe in you,” a familiar voice said from behind. I turned in my chair. That familiar voice was Victoria. I’d never seen her so.. so.. Hopeful?
“Thank you, all, really. I’m ready. Now let’s win this competition!” I said to everyone who was there.
